Project overview
A former fuel transfer depot in Stowmarket, Suffolk, was acquired by our client, Goff Petroleum, with plans to redevelop the site for similar activities. As an environmentally responsible landowner and to ensure the redevelopment process was free from planning restrictions, the client commissioned an investigation to assess any ongoing or historical contamination resulting from past operations.
Our approach
We conducted a thorough site investigation using clean drilling techniques for each borehole, ensuring strict decontamination procedures were followed between borehole locations. The investigation revealed the presence of hydrocarbon contamination in both soil and groundwater.
To address this, we carried out:
- Intrusive investigations and environmental monitoring to quantify contamination levels.
- An environmental analysis to evaluate the potential for off-site migration of contaminants, which was determined to be unfeasible.
Outcome
A small-scale clean-up operation was recommended to address the contamination, enabling the redevelopment to proceed smoothly. The site was cleared for commercial activities without further regulatory intervention, ensuring the client’s operations could commence without delay.
