Project overview
While conducting directional drilling to install four cable ducts beneath a railway cutting in Morecambe, near Lancaster, the drilling contractor encountered an unexpected obstruction in the solid geology. The initial site investigation had not identified this resistant material, resulting in significant costs from damaged drill heads and standing time.
Our approach
AMS No-Dig Limited engaged us to investigate the issue. We conducted rotary drilling at the obstruction site, as identified by the drilling contractor, and extracted samples for logging and petrographic analysis.
Findings
The analysis revealed that the obstructive material was significantly stronger than indicated in the preliminary site investigation. This critical insight allowed our client to demonstrate the inadequacy of the original data.
Outcome
Armed with the new evidence, AMS No-Dig Limited successfully claimed back approximately £250,000 in undue costs.
